Google is updating its algorithms almost every Year. Some changes are minute & some are so effective that it change the Google SERP drastically. SERP means Search Engine Response Page.

Since 2011, we have seen 10 major Algorithms which affected the Website’s Rankings & Traffic. Some Sites which were topping the tally with following one algorithm, all of a sudden, fell into ‘No Data’ zone when another algorithm came in the picture. Lets check these 10 Algorithms which came in the last decade:

1. Panda Algorithm
2. Penguin Algorithm
3. HummingBird
4. Pigeon Algorithm
5. Mobile or Mobilegaddon
6. RankBrain Algorithm
7. Possum Algorithm
8. Fred Algoithm
9. Google EAT &
10. Google BERT

Recently, In Jan 2020, Google Broad Core Algorithm has come with an update about ‘Featured Snippet’. What are these Algorithms, when they were introduced & what were the loopholes in these Algorithms. Lets Check it out.

Ist Algorithm which came in the picture was Panda. It came in Feb 2011. It used to give high rating to the websites on the basis of Quality Score. If your Website has PA (Page Authority) good, it ranked your website high in Google Searches.

In Jan 2016, this Algorithm was obsolete because of 4 Factors:

  • Duplicacy
  • Plaggerism
  • Spamming
  • Keyword Stuffing

2nd Algorithm which came into picture was Penguin. It came in April 2012. It was targetting over-optimized text. It was downgrading those sites which had Manipulative Links. If we take the example of India Vs New Zealand. If someone creates a post targeting India vs New Zealand One Day Series. He writes post’s Title, Description, Tags, Alt Txt Image, Keywords, Snippet, Body of the post targetting ‘India Vs New Zealand Series’ and write altogether a different story after that, which has no link to this Context; Still Google will show this page in the rankings. That was the loophole and by Late 2016, this Algorithm was also obsolete.

3rd Algorithm which came in August 2013 was HummingBird. It was based on mainly Search Queries Intent. It was relying on Natural Language Processing with Semantic Indexing, co-occuring terms & Synonyms. However, Keyword Stuffing & Low Quality content were the areas for rollback of this Algorithm.

4th Algorithm was Pigeon Algorithm which was released on 2 Locations. In July 2014(US) & Dec 2014( UK, Canada & Aus). It was a releief for Local Searches. It was affecting those searches where User’s Location was playing an imp part. If Your Site’s Onpage SEO is not done and you have not listed it any Directories, It will not show your website anywhere. That was a major loophole in this Algorithm.

5th Algorithm  was MobileGeddon which came in Apr 2015. It’s simply known as Mobile Algorthm as well. If your website is Mobile Friendly,  it will rank your Website High. And If it is not Mobile Responsive, it will deteriorate its ranking in Google Searches. It was targeting 3 factors:

  • Go Mobile
  • Speed
  • Usability

‘Lack of Mobile Version’ the Criteria for Ranking up or Down for a website; was not satisfactory. Hence some more amendments were required.

6th Algorithm which turned the eyeballs was RankBrain. It was a part of HummingBird Algorithm. In Oct 2015, this Algorthm came but it was also unable to compete on Query Specific relevant features, shallow Content & Poor UI (User Interface).

7th Algorithm was Possum Algirthm. It appeared in Sep 2016. Closer you are to a Business Address, ranking will change accordingly. It was the rise of Local SEO, near me concept & Google My Business Listing. It made the competition tense in the Target Location.

8th Algorithm came in March 2017, Fred Algorithm. It targeted those wensites which were violating Google Webmaster Tool Guidelines. Majority of sites which were affected by it were Blogs with Low Quality Content & those which were made just to generate Revenue by un-authorized means. Poor & ad-centered Content & those pages, which were gateway of affiliate links, it was ranking down those websites.

Now, we talk about 2019. In 2019, 2 Algorithms came into picture. EAT & BERT.

9th Algorithm was Google EAT. In Early 2019, EAT(Expertise, Authority & Trustworthiness). You have seen that If you like one political party & watch 2/3 videos of it. It will start showing you similar videos. And one can make wrong perception on basis of it.
Now, Google is working on it as QuestionHub to be more transparent. Basis on that, if your content is following Google EAT, it will rank your website High.

10th Alorithm was Google BERT. Some say it Extension of Google BroadCore HummingBird Update. In Dec 2019 latest Update, It encodes 70 languages. Earlier, we used to repeat our Matter twice in 2 laguages, to target both Languages Audience. But now, BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representation from Transformers) converts it in 70 languages in the backend. It has international languages like spanish, Italian, Russian, Chinese AND it has regional languages like Hindi, Urdu, tamil, Telgu, Kannada etc

So, Friends, these were the 10 Algorithms which Google followed in the last decade. If you know any other Algorithm or if you have any query, please mention that in the comment section below. Thank You
